According to a survey of small and medium business owners conducted by RSM Bird Cameron* in 2013, 56% of owners do not have a plan for selling or exiting their business. Yet 34% of those surveyed expect the proceeds from the sale to fund their retirement. The situation has got any better since this survey!
It can take as long as 3 years to really turn your business in to a valuable and saleable asset.

One reason we’re seeing this worrying situation is the dramatic fall in the value of superannuation funds since the global financial crisis started. Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Business owners are in danger of retiring without sufficient funds to maintain their lifestyle in retirement.
Also, from my experience as a business consultant / coach and former business broker the majority of business owners have no idea how they are going to exit their business with any equity at all. It’s a sad state of affairs.
Quite often business owners I meet have an inflated view of what their business is worth, do not have an exit strategy and in many cases their business is unsaleable. It doesn’t need to be like this!
There are some simple things that business owners can do to avoid exiting their business without a good payout, but they need to start NOW! It’s no use waiting until they want or need to sell.
